Logistics experts and manufacturer collaborate to ensure a life-saving therapy reaches patient surrounded by closed air space

Objectif

Coordinate the collection of a patient’s apheresis cells in Ramat Gan, Israel, transport them to a manufacturing facility in Cologne, Germany for CAR-T cell production, and ensure an accelerated return of the personalized therapy for administration back to the patient.

Transporting a patient's donor cells for CAR-T manufacturing and safely returning the therapy over a 48-hour time period while maintaining cryogenic temperatures is already a high-stakes logistical challenge. When compounded by geopolitical unrest and regional disruptions, it becomes a critical test of precision logistics. During this operation, Israel was undergoing a missile attack by Iran, which triggered sweeping airspace closures, heightened airport security, and severe flight restrictions. Adding to the difficulty were escalating tensions between countries inside the region. Experts needed to formulate a plan with contingencies to deliver the vitla shipment though one of the most volatile areas in the world. 

Solution

Given the regional instability, logistics experts designed alternate routes and contingency plans to avoid restricted airspace and conflict zones. The apheresis shipment was closely tracked to the manufacturer in Cologne, Germany, with proactive monitoring throughout. To ensure security and control, the package was transported in the aircraft cockpit, as arranged with the pilot through direct communication and planning. Dedicated drivers, trained specifically in handling sensitive cell and gene therapies, managed transport to and from the airport, ensuring the ultra-sensitive product reached its destination safely and on time. 

Résultat

After arriving at the airport in Tel Aviv, the CAR-T therapy was transported via dedicated driver to the hospital in Ramat Gan where it was administered in prime efficacy.
